Is Your Food Certified Humane?

周四, 2月14日, Foxcroft welcomed Laurie Bain from the Middleburg-based non-profit certification organization dedicated to improving the lives of farm animals, Certified Humane. Ms. Bain is the latest speaker in the 阀杆 Presents series, instituted this year by Director of 阀杆 Education, Kristine Varney.
Certified Humane is the most stringent certification program in the world, and the organization currently serves ten countries and 6,000个农场, with approximately 2 billion animals under their care. Veteran lobbyist and former congressional staff member, Adele Douglass, created the non-profit organization in 2003 after recognizing a rise in consumer demand for humane products, and they have experienced exponential growth since their inception. Bain explained during her presentation that “farmers get pressure from consumers as consumers become more educated about where their food comes from, and this leads to an increase in farmers who want to become certified.”

The organization employs a Scientific Committee made up of academics, veterinarians, and other experts that continually research best farming practices, and Bain highlighted one such expert of note — Dr. Temple Grandin, internationally recognized animal scientist whose research and insight revolutionized the treatment of livestock handling processes.

Bain emphasized the importance of outreach, and provided the student audience with tools to spread the word, including sample letters to local grocery stores urging them to carry Certified Humane products. She also introduced the students to the Certified Humane app, 网站, and 脸谱网 page, where the public can go to search for local restaurants and stores that carry Certified Humane food and other products.

After a question and answer portion, Bain concluded the presentation with the following thought: “Consumer demand for Certified Humane products is the most efficient way to get more animals covered under our standards. The younger generation is the one that changes the future, so I urge you to spread the word!”
